PHOENIX, Ariz. (Jan. 3, 2024) — The Phoenix metropolitan area is the third leading U-Haul Growth Metro of 2024.
The Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler market, better known as the Valley, saw the third largest net gain of U-Haul® customers using one-way moving equipment to and from metro areas last year in the U.S.
The Dallas-Fort Worth (Texas) Metroplex tops the growth metro list, followed by Charlotte (N.C). Lakeland (Fla.) and Austin (Texas) round out the top five.
The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled from well over 2.5 million one-way truck, trailer and U-Box® portable moving container transactions that occur annually in the U.S. and Canada. This is the first year that metropolitan areas have been part of the annual growth reports and rankings.
“One of the biggest things that brings people to the Valley is the weather,” said Whitney Bell, U-Haul Company of Metro Phoenix president. “Obviously, it’s unbearable for 2-3 months in the summer, but for 75% of the year it’s very nice. It allows you to do outdoor activities year-round. Another reason is the cost of living. You get the feel of a big city with Phoenix, but it’s not nearly as expensive as most places out west.
“U-Haul is expanding across the Valley to accommodate this growth. We just opened a store in Surprise with over 1,000 self-storage rooms and 1,200 U-Box capacity. We have another store in Queen Creek opening in the next month, and one of our largest stores (in Arizona) is coming to Scottsdale with 1,500 storage rooms and 2,500 U-Box capacity. In Apache Junction and Leveen, we just opened new facilities, and we have sites in Buckeye coming on board.”
Erica Marquez, U-Haul Company of Western Arizona president, added: “Lots of customers are moving to the northwest side, particularly to Litchfield Park and Surprise. On the outskirts, there is more land and space for people who don’t want to be right in the city. There are plenty of career opportunities in Phoenix. Arizona State University is obviously here in the Valley, and it attracts students from all over the world. Many decide to stay after school.”
Florida boasts seven of the top 25 U.S. growth metros, Texas has five and North Carolina has three.

U-Haul is the authority on migration trends thanks to its expansive network that blankets all 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces. The geographical coverage from 23,000-plus U-Haul rental locations provides a broad overview of where people are moving like no one else in the industry.
U-Haul continues to benefit the environment through its shared-use business model. Truck and trailer sharing empowers communities to share moving equipment so that families and individuals don’t need to own large-capacity vehicles to transfer belongings. Sustainability initiatives like U-Haul Adaptive Reuse (the preserving and repurposing of existing buildings for new stores), truck modifications to improve fuel economy, and plastic Ready-To-Go Boxes® that are shared hundreds of times before being recycled are among the ways U-Haul promotes green business. U-Box Load Share, the Company’s latest sustainability program, continues to earn awards for providing ecofriendly solutions to today’s gig economy.
